About Ozarks Walkabout

In one line, this is what Ozarks Walkabout is all about:

Helping and encouraging everyone to get out and enjoy the outdoors in a responsible and considerate manner.
Getting you out and about

We concentrate our writing and pictures on getting out and about in the Ozarks because that’s where we live. It’s also because we believe the area has a lot to offer to outdoors people. But we don’t limit ourselves to the Ozarks, so you never know what you might find here.

The gear reviews, hints and tips we write are useful to everyone interested in hiking, backpacking, camping, and paddling. We stick with those topics because that’s what we enjoy doing the most and it’s what we continue to learn about.

While many people consider getting outdoors just an activity, we think of it as a life choice:

We’re certainly not trendy and don’t wear the big name brands just to look good swaggering around town.
If buying the latest fashion brands and all the trendy gizmos suits you, that’s great. Each to their own, it’s just not our style. You can expect the advice we give to be practical and down to earth rather than about the latest fashion accessory. We firmly believe in saving our money for the important things. Our writing and reviews here reflect that.

When we were getting started hiking and camping we found it difficult to find one place to get information on where to go and what to do.
That’s because the wildernesses, forests, lakes, and public campgrounds are controlled by different state and federal authorities – each with their own websites. So we’ve compiled and are sharing a lot of information regarding the wildernesses, trails, campgrounds, and lakes in the Ozarks so you won’t be as lost as we were.

We enjoy getting out and about in the Ozarks.

We hike, we backpack, we go car camping. We explore the lakes and we fish from our kayaks. We are also getting on in life, not as fit as we ought to be, and carrying more extra weight than just our packs.
Like everyone else, we struggle to find the time for our love of the outdoors with all the things life throws at us. If we can do it, there’s no reason you shouldn’t give it a try too.

And don’t worry if you’ve not done any of this before.
We had always wanted to get outdoors, but we just didn’t know how to get started until some friends took us car camping in 2010. They had no idea what they’d started. Our first camping trip was in May of that year, we bought our kayaks in August and went on our first backpacking trip in December. The rest, as they say, is history.
